About me

Hi, I’m Phil, founder of SW Sustainability.

I’I have spent over a decade helping businesses, universities, charities, and social enterprises make sustainability real, in the way they operate and the decisions they make.

In that time I have built and led teams, mentored sustainability professionals, and designed strategies across leisure, hospitality, real estate, and financial services. Most recently I supported a national leisure operator to develop a combined climate and nature strategy, becoming the first provider in the sector to formally integrate nature and biodiversity into a net zero framework.

I founded SW Sustainability because there is a significant gap in who the sustainability industry is actually serving. There are over 5.5 million SMEs in the UK, representing 99% of all businesses. A great deal of work has rightly gone into supporting large corporates to set targets and decarbonise. But SMEs make up the backbone of those supply chain emissions. Setting ambitious targets at the top of a value chain means very little without the right skills, knowledge, and action running all the way through it.

That is the gap I work in. I help businesses build sustainability strategies that are right for them, breaking down big targets into practical steps that make sense for their size, their sector, and the way they actually operate.

My work covers strategy development, carbon footprinting and reporting, nature and biodiversity advisory, and training and workshops. I also work as a fractional Head of Sustainability for businesses that need senior sustainability leadership without a full-time hire, and I coach early-career sustainability professionals who want to grow faster.

What clients tell me they need and could not find elsewhere is someone they trust, who understands their business properly, and who cares as much about their success as they do. I work with my clients over a long period of time (12 years in one case), across multiple different projects because my clients trust me. That trust is a currency I have come to benefit from.

The goal is never just to help businesses do sustainable things. It is to help them become sustainable businesses.

If that sounds like what you are looking for, I would love a conversation.
